Learning from Bumps in the Road & NO SHOTS!

Hello from Guangzhou!

I will do a quick recap of Thursday night and Friday. Thursday Lan Lan started to miss her foster mom and wanted to call her. She found her picture when we were packing and had that in one hand and the phone in the other. I could not let her call her... Broke my heart and hers too. She was sad which turned into mad. We had major listening and temper issues...I was very worried about how I would ever manage on the plane with her at that point and was very upset myself. The TV became an major issue too. A very tough 24 hours. But the good news is this happened in the safety of our hotel room and not in the airport. Our guide was VERY good with her and explained it was too expensive to call but she could write letters to her. She explained to me if I want to I can send letters and pictures to the foster mother by sending them to the orphanage. She said the orphanage would make sure the foster mother received them. Her foster mother was very good to her and for that I will be forever grateful....

In the afternoon on Friday after our guide spoke with her, Lan Lan was very good and helped me finish packing. She seemed excited to be moving on (me too!) and was a good listener. Once we were at the airport and ready to go through security, it was time to say goodbye to Evelyn our wonderful guide. Lan Lan started to cry. Evelyn said it was because she was leaving her. I think that was part of it and the other part was she was scared out of her head about the airplane. She was very tearful while we waited an hour for our flight. I kept trying to distract her but was not very successful. Once we were on the plane and took off she was GREAT! She is a wonderful traveler and was a huge help once we landed. I am so glad we got the "listening to your Momma issues" worked out earlier.

We landed in Guangzhou in the dark and it was beautiful. I could not find a luggage cart and had to try to handle our bags alone which was near impossible. Finally someone helped us get a cart. We were met by our smiling and bubbly guides Jocelyn and Kathy. They noticed us long before we saw them. Did I mention we stand out? Kathy was one of our guides in 2007 with Manon. She and Jocelyn are very sweet and helpful They keep asking to translate for Lan Lan and I but I keep saying we are doing fine. We really need to manage on our own and we are doing great! The ride to the hotel was uneventful. No more crazy taxi rides for us! Lan Lan kept saying "wow" with all the lights and then our hotel room. By the time we unpacked (we are here for six days) we exhaused and went to bed.

Lan Lan and I are very happy to be in Guangzhou! Hardly any cigarette smoke!!! This place is my oasis in the whole trip. It is a beautiful place. It is on Shamian Island and was settled by the British. It is over looking the Pearl River. This is where all families from the US adopting in China must come to complete the US end of things. There are MANY MANY American families here now! I have been able to become part of a group of ten families, two of whom I was with in Hong Kong. It is wonderful to see them with their new children. Today was the medical exam and TB skin test. The best news of all, NO SHOTS!!!! Many, many prayers answered. I do believe in immunizations in small doses not 7-9 at once and this in so not the time for an adopted child to receive them. I have the waiver that we promise to get her immunizations up to date within 30 days. Our doctor will do titers to see what she needs. I truly believe she has had immunizations and she has the mark on her arm to prove it. She will need to get blood drawn anyway so the titers will not cause any extra picks. The guide in Nanchang told me no shots for sure on Friday. She must have thought I was the silliest momma ever because I cried when she told me. But they were tears of relief..... But last night I had an email from our agency saying that because of her age being 10 that she did not qualify for the waiver so she would need the shots.... I cried again..... But the law clearly states 10 and under so our guides this morning reassured me no shots. This immunization issue has truly been a rollercoaster for me. I held my breath at the medical exam and guess what? NO SHOTS!!!!! She did have the TB skin test and we will have to go back to the clinic on Monday to have it read. The whole medical exam is a little silly and VERY chaotic. There were many families at once there and it was crazy! It was the same way with Manon in 2007. It is just a formality to get home. For the hearing test they squeak a toy....

Any way she did great except the doctor doing the physical was very concerned with the fine scars on her face. She made us go to several other doctors at their booths to show them. Lan Lan became upset (me too) about this. The scars are very fine and I do not even notice them anymore. You can tell it bothers her when people look and talk about the scars. The doctor was so engrossed in the scars she did not listen to her lungs or heart. This surprised me because I had the chest x rays and CT scan results and the chest x-ray showed advanced bronchitis. I would think she would have wanted to listen to her chest? I have listened to it and it is absolutely clear. She has no cough, wheeze or fever. I never started the antibiotic but have it if I need to.

Anyway we were glad to be out of there. We did get to meet many nice families today! It was nice to see her interact with other children. She was very sweet with them! I was glad to see that. I have been wondering how she will do with Manon. I think she will be great with her! We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the island and did a little shopping. I always regretted not getting Manon a silk dress so I found a nice one for her, Lan Lan and Kelsey too. One of our first stops was Starbucks! Did I mention I am coffee deprived? There are tons of "photo shoots" going on here. We have had our pictures taken quite a few times too! We are going to head back out to walk around in the dark so she can see the lights. Tomorrow morning we go on a tour with the group and in the afternoon we complete the visa paperwork.

There is a nice deli next to the hotel that we bought noodles for dinner from. She loves her noodles! She eats most everything with chop sticks and is a pro! We will work on using a fork once we are home. She has tried a few times but it is frustrating for her.

All in all she continues to do very well. Most of the time she is very happy but still has her moments. It is all part of the process. She is learning how to be a daughter and I am learning how to be her mother. It is all good.

I miss Ron and Manon a ton and I miss talking to the boys a ton too. But the good news is we are using skype and I am hoping to talk to Ron and Manon on Saturday on Skype. I was able to call them on the phone today and it was WONDERFUL to talk to them! Other good news is we are over the half way mark!

On TV they have a version of "Are you smarter than a fifth grader" and "A minute to win it". Most of the stuff on TV is AWFUL.... She loves it and you can tell she has watched a lot of it.... I am letting her watch it at times but not all of the time.

Good night from Guanghou,
Brenda and Lan Lan

All Tuckered Out; Keep on Truckin'

Hello,

We made it to Guanzhou but were exhausted after getting settled into our new home for the next week. Lan Lan is a great little traveler and big helper!
Great news (I believe) on the immunization issue. I am told by our guides NO SHOTS for sure BUT I just received an email from our agency that the law only applies to kids under 10 so since she is 10 she will get them???????????? We head out in a few hours for the medical appointment so I will know once we get there...... Keep praying for this. Now is so not the time for immunizations..... Needless to say I am nervous again. Everything I read on the law states children 10 and under.....
Good night,
Mom and Lan Lan

A Couple O'Pictures

Day Four in Nanchang

Nothing exciting to report today except that we now have a mic for our laptop and we are packing to move on to Guanzhou tomorrow!!!!! We had a few battle of the wills last night (I won) and she is testing the waters at times today. All a normal part of the process. I say no she says yes or visa versa. All in all she continues to do well.

She spent quite a bit of time on her hair today! Interesting do! I claim NO CREDIT for her hair in the pics today. She continues to eat and drink well. She is picking out her own snacks when we go to the market. According to the scale, she has gained two pounds since Sunday afternoon. I do not think it will take long for her to fill out!

We went to Walmart again to get the mic and a suitcase. It turns out a third suitcase will not solve my luggage weight issues. No matter how many suitcases we have to check, the total weight can only be 88 pounds. This may sound like a lot but with stuff for two people for two weeks, it is not. But I did buy a new carry on because the I will put the heavier stuff in it for the trip to Guanzhou. On the way to Hong Kong and home, I will check the new bag.

After Walmart we went to a huge bookstore. You have to put your bags etc in a locker before you go in the store. I have noticed lockers a quite a few stores and wondered what they were for. Our guide said that is so people do not steal anything in the store. Lan Lan picked out a pop music CD and our guide helped me pick out a CD set with traditional Chinese music. Lan Lan also picked out a few books to take home. She is reading one of them right now. The guide is impressed with her reading ability and keeps saying how smart she is. She keeps telling me how important it is to keep her Mandarin. We will look into lessons once we are settled. There were a lot of people in the bookstore reading. I asked our guide if there are a lot of people in China that can not read and she said not as many as before because now they have 9 years of compulsory education that became free 2-3 years ago.

On our way into Walmart the guide told us to wait a minute for her. She walked over to an entrance to an underground tunnel and gave a man some money. She came back and she said she always gives him money when she sees him because he can not work and one day she saw his daughter come and get him. She said she feels bad for him. She said he is the only one she gives to. On the way out of Walkmart I gave her a little money and asked her if she could give it to him. We walked by him after she gave him the money and I saw why she felt so bad for him. His face was totally disfigured like he had been badly burned or worse. Very very sad. I wish I had given more......

We did walk to the market again today. I did see some interesting things but am trying to respect people and not take too many pictures. It was very warm here today and we were over dressed so Lan Lan did not want to stay out to long. I would have loved to walk around more but am sure we will be able to in Guanzhou. My cough is still hanging in there but I think the smokers convention is over. They are starting to decorate the hotel for Christmas. I will post pictures of it tomorrow. Our guide said not many people celebrate Christmas except the businessmen so they can make money...

Tomorrow we have to wait in the hotel while our guide goes to get Lan Lan's passport. Then we have to have our bags all packed by 2pm, and checkout of the hotel by 2:30pm. The flight to Guanzhou is about 1.5 hours. Lan Lan keeps saying no to airplane but keep us in your prayers that it goes well. It will be a good test for the long flight home.

We have been able to skype with Nate, Alex, my mom and sister Heidi. I am hoping Nick and Ron get on skype soon! Ron has been pretty busy with work, the long drive and Manon. I did get to talk to them tonight on the phone. Once we are in Guanzhou i can buy cheap phone cards so I can call more often.

We are both tired of being stuck in the hotel, sick of being over dressed and ready to move on!!!! Guanzhou here we come!!!!

Orchid Blossom

Hello,
Wow I miss you! I was able to skype with my mom Alex and Nate. Just no one can hear me but I can hear you. I will buy a headset with a mic tomorrow at Walmart.
Today we went to the Tong Wang Pavilion. It is over 1,400 years old. There was a prince from far away. His father though he was no good at politics so he sent him far away. The prince had this pavilion built just for fun. He was an artist so he did many famous paintings in the pavilion. I have lots more details about it but will do a small post about it later. Very interesting. There was a show there that I did a few videos on. Not sure if Alex can post them or not. There is major road work going on around it and the streets are gone. I think you should be able to see this in the pics. It is a very popular place for the Chinese to visit. Lan Lan did very well. She was a little quiet and sad this am but it did not last long. At breakfast we were talking to a family from Ohio that adopted a beautiful 10 month old baby from Lan Lan's orphanage. She was thrilled to see the baby and picked her right up out of her high chair. The mom was very sweet about it. Lan Lan noticed the baby again in the lobby and AGAIN at the pavilion. She loves babies! The guide told me that Lan means Orchid blossom- I am thrilled to watch her bloom more each day! So glad we kept Lan in her name! The taxi ride was super scary! I do not think I have ever been in a car going that fast before AND no seat belts! EEKKKKKKK.... The guide asked the driver to slow down for me!
We played in the playroom kicking and throwing the balloon. She loves to kick and catch. Manon, she will be a great playmate! She now says I love you in English instead of Manderan. She is using more words everyday. The guide and I agreed no more street crossing alone for us! She showed us a little street market near the hotel that we can walk to for water and things. We went there this afternoon and did well. She was able to pick things out that she wanted. Our laundry was picked up yesterday and came back today. I almost fell over when I figured out how much it cost!!!!! I will not be doing anymore laundry here. It will be much cheaper in Guanzhou and I will do the light stuff by hand. I have our window open again today and it is helping with the smoke. The minute I go out in the hall I start coughing.
We are hanging out in the room and playing games. Lan Lan loved seeing her grandmother and her brothers! She was laughing a lot at her brothers. Now if we can just get daddy on skype we will be all set. Oh, Alex and Nate are trying to get Nick on too.
Lan Lan is hugging and kissing freely! Oh, I bent over to hug her and she jumped up just like Manon does so I could hold her! I am in BIG trouble!!!! Luckily she is 10 pounds lighter but the way she is eating I do not think it will take her long to fill out.
Tomorrow we go out in the morning again but I forgot where we are going!
So why are we still in Nanchang???? The guide picks up the official documents tomorrow and the passport on Friday. After we have her passport we fly to Guanzhou to complete the US side of things including the medical exam and immunizations...... and Consulate appointment.
Love mom/Brenda and Lan Lan
